What Is A Motor Vehicle Report?

When conducting a pre-employment screening, there are a few critical aspects to keep in mind. Background screening, examining criminal records, checking credit, and verifying employment history are among those.

However, many employers often overlook the need for reviewing the driving record of a prospective employee. If the duties of a position include operating a vehicle for the job, it is especially important to review their Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) before making the hiring decision. Luckily, it only takes minutes to do and can aid enormously in protecting your business.

What is an MVR?

A Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) is essentially a report card of an individual’s driving record. It provides a summary of various violations such as traffic citations, DUI convictions, points history, and accident reports. The information on a Motor Vehicle Report typically goes back three to seven years, depending on the state.

In addition to details regarding violations, an MVR also contains personal information about the individual and the status of their license. The comprehensiveness of the report enables an employer to make a highly informed decision about whether or not to employ someone who will be driving for the company.

When is it necessary?

Most commonly, auto insurers utilize an MVR to evaluate how risky a driver is and determine their rate of pay. Similarly, we recommend all employers to also review an applicant’s MVR before making a hiring decision. This is considerably imperative if the employee will be operating heavy machinery for the job. Employers need to know if a job candidate’s records report involvement in a car accident or conviction of a DUI. Failing to review the MVR of a prospective employee who will hold a safety sensitive position is not proper due diligence. This ultimately leads to profound negative consequences for the employer.

When conducting a pre-employment background check, it’s important not to overlook a motor vehicle report. Reports typically generate in less than 24 hours when obtaining an MVR for your new hire. This can help protect your business from substantial loss. Automobile accidents, should they occur, can lead to thousands of dollars in losses and increase insurance costs for your business.

It is advantageous to include motor vehicle reports in your pre-employment screening process. Learn more about the MVR services Alliance 2020 offers here.
