Have you ever been in an interview and felt uncomfortable sharing how much money you made at previous jobs? What if you’re offered a lower pay because of it? In some states, it’s illegal for an employer to ask about your salary history.
This initiative began in response to the gender pay gap. Women are statistically paid less than men for doing the same job. Local and state governments are enacting laws across the country that prohibit employers from seeking an applicant’s salary history. This ban allows more equal opportunities for you to receive the same wage for your work – regardless of gender.
Is your state one of them? We recently compiled a list of the salary history laws for every state for you, so you know your rights during the application and employment process. Check out the new page under the Resources tab, or click here.
